MICA - Muskrat and coypu camera trap observations in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany is an occurrence dataset published by the Research Institute of Nature and Forest (INBO). It is part of the LIFE project MICA, in which innovative techniques are tested for a more efficient control of muskrat and coypu populations, both invasive species. This dataset is a sample of the original dataset and serves as an example of a Camera Trap Data Package (Camtrap DP).

This dataset contains 760 georeferenced herbarium specimen records (one occurrence per row, 33 fields) documenting vascular plant collections held by the University of White Plains. All records derive from a single collecting region: the department of Petén, Guatemala (countryCode GT), spanning five municipalities — San Andrés, Flores, San José, Melchor de Mencos, and La Libertad. The collection events range from 1966 to 2015.Each record carries a unique occurrenceID (URN format) and a unique catalogNumber. Fields cover collection metadata (collector/recordedBy, date split across YE/MO/DA plus a combined eventDate, individualCount), locality and georeference data (lat, lon, Elevation, geodeticDatum, coordinateUncertaintyInMeters, locality description), identification (identifiedBy), and a full taxonomic hierarchy (kingdom through infraspecific epithet, with authorship and taxon rank).Taxonomically, the dataset is narrow: every record is in kingdom Plantae, phylum Magnoliophyta, class Equisetopsida, order Poales. Nine families are represented, with Bromeliaceae (588 records) dominating, followed by Poaceae (106) and Cyperaceae (38). Seventy-two genera appear, most frequently Aechmea, Guzmania, Tillandsia, and Pitcairnia. Identifications are resolved to species for 694 records, to genus for 45, to family for 20, and to variety for 1. Collecting is concentrated among a few botanists (chiefly Vargas I. and Betancur J.), and most identifications were made by Betancur J. Coordinates use the WGS84 datum.

This dataset is an annotated checklist of 21 invasive species recorded on the Island of Hawaiʻi (Big Island), in the Hawaiian Islands, United States. The taxonomic core comprises 20 vascular plants and one amphibian (the coqui frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui), each documented with its full classification, scientific name authorship, vernacular name, nomenclatural code and taxonomic status. Taxa span a range of management-concern families in Hawaiʻi, including notable invaders such as Miconia calvescens, Clidemia hirta, Ulex europaeus, Pennisetum setaceum, and Cyathea cooperi.Attached to the checklist is an occurrence extension of 872 georeferenced records collected between December 2005 and December 2010. Each occurrence is linked to its taxon, located by decimal latitude and longitude, and characterised by occurrence status, establishment means and invasiveness. All records represent species considered present and invasive within the surveyed area. The dataset is intended to support invasive-species monitoring, early detection and rapid response efforts, and biodiversity research on the ecology and distribution of non-native species in the Hawaiian Islands.

The event data is the result of the Swedish Butterfly Network (SBN) monitoring of the occurrence of butterflies (Lepidoptera) at a series of 500 fixed sites 3-7 times per season ( 1April through 30 September) on an annual basis since 2009 using fixed-route Pollard walks or point counts. Fixed-route Pollard walk transects are pre-defined routes typically 0.5-3 km in length. Surveyors follow the transect at a steady pace and identify all the butterflies observed up to 5 m in front, 5 m above, and 2.5 m to each side. Point site counts cover an area with a 25 m radius and a height of 5 m that are surveyed for 15 minutes per visit.

Compliant with GBIF's Audubon Core standards, it assigns a unique identifier to each document, such as photographs of preserved birds, scans of handwritten lighthouse logs, or archive cards from the Copenhagen Museum. By directly linking these multimedia files to the corresponding "Case ID", this document provides indisputable visual evidence of species identification. It enriches the textual database, offering global researchers direct access to digitized historical archives.

This dataset presents occurrence records and notes of birds extracted from the multiple volumes of “Fuglene ved de danske Fyr 1883-1939” (i.e. “Birds at the Danish Lighthouses 1883-1939”).The dataset was created firstly by digitizing the book volumes "Fuglene ved de danske Fyr" into PDF files, OCR-ing the PDF files and finally extracting relevant data and compiling them in a database file. In the period 1883-1939, there were 45 lighthouses and lightships functioning in Denmark. This dataset contains specific occurrence records and notes on bird species that struck 2 of these, namely Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr. The dataset covers records from during the nights of bird migration period from the years 1886 through 1939 (there were no occurrence records or notes on Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr between 1883- 1885 and 1887-1888). A total of 1212 records were generated with 742 records from Lodbjerg Fyr and 470 records from Hanstholm Fyr. A detailed description of the sampling and digitization process may be found at: https://samlinger.snm.ku.dk/digitale-ressourcer/research-files/fyrfaldne-fugle/. The two specific lighthouses Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr were selected for extraction from the book volumes through a suggestion from the Thy National Park, Denmark (http://nationalparkthy.dk/). They wanted to use these specific occurrence data for an exhibition project. This databasing effort has been co-funded by Thy National Park and DanBIF. Future projects could include to extract data on more lighthouses from these digitized book volumes, all available at https://samlinger.snm.ku.dk/digitale-ressourcer/research-files/fyrfaldne-fugle/. The number of specimens of the fallen birds that were sent by light keepers to the Zoological Museum of Copenhagen was also recorded in this dataset. These birds were carefully preserved and catalogued by collection workers at the museum and the specimens can still be found there today. Observations on weather conditions during nights when birds were observed by light keepers were also included. Data from this dataset were extracted from “Report on Birds in Danmark, 1886” (published by Ornis) and Fuglene ved de danske Fyr volumes (published in Videnskabelige Meddelelser fra den Naturhistoriske Forening i København). Most of the book volumes were compiled by Herluf Winge (1857-1923), a Danish zoologist who studied mammalian dentition. After the early death of his brother, Oluf Winge (1855-1889), who was a leading Danish ornithologist at his time, Herluf helped to compile "Fuglene ved de danske Fyr": Birds at the Danish Lighthouses 1891-1910 and until 1912 he supplemented this with his own bird observations.

Designed according to GBIF's Darwin Core standards, it assigns a unique identifier (Case ID) to each avian mortality event recorded between 1883 and 1939. This key file ensures the traceability of the thousands of specimens sent to the Zoological Museum of Copenhagen. By linking taxonomic data to lighthouse locations, it eliminates duplicates, validates chronological consistency, and allows researchers to exploit a cleaned database to model global migrations.

The historical project Fuglene ved de danske Fyr documents migratory bird mortality in Denmark between 1883 and 1939. For over fifty years, keepers at 45 lighthouses and lightships, notably Lodbjerg and Hanstholm, collected dead birds that struck the structures during nocturnal migrations. These thousands of specimens were sent to the Zoological Museum of Copenhagen. This unique dataset gathers valuable information on dates, weather, and the affected species. Today, it allows scientists to analyze the evolution of migratory routes and the historical impact of light pollution on wildlife.

This mock educational project trains Hawaiian high school students in data collection for 21 targeted invasive plant species under the supervision of the HISC and island committees (ISCs). Graduate students from the University of Hawaii subsequently validate these photographic identifications. La Asociación Comunitaria El Mosqueral es un referente nacional en conservación comunitaria, que con el objetivo de respaldar la investigación científica, la educación ambiental y la toma de decisiones locales, ha decidido monitorear la biodiversidad presente en la Reserva Natural “El Desentendido” en el Departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia y publicar los datos a través de GBIF. Para el monitoreo se utilizaron cámaras trampa activadas por sensor de movimiento configuradas para operar de manera continua. La instalación, el mantenimiento de los equipos en campo y la posterior identificación taxonómica fueron liderados por Paula Sánchez, quien a su vez utilizó software especializado para apoyarse en la organización de los datos e identificación automatizada de algunas especies, específicamente de aves y mamíferos.

The Swedish Butterfly Network (SBN) has been monitoring the occurrence of butterflies (Lepidoptera) at a series of fixed sites 3-7 times per season on an annual basis since 2009.This network of observers implements one of two standard protocols at each site: Pollard walks where the site is an established transect or point counts at stationary point sites. Observation information is captured by observers on paper data capture sheets that they send to the national SBN office.The SBN steering committee would like to start publishing these data online to GBIF in order to strengthen collaborations the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the Swedish County Administration Boards to influence conservation policies for Lepidoptera in Sweden.

The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHM-DK) is a research centre associated with the University of Copenhagen. Their library is a member of the national library association who recently received state funding to make available online the resources held by its members. The NHM-DK would like to begin digitization of the field notebooks, journal publications and books held in their library, some of which have significant historic value.After a short consultation with their regular partners, NHM-DK received a suggestion from the Head of the management office of the Nordjylland National Park. They would like the contents of a particular classic literature compilation digitized for a project they are running: ‘Birds at the Danish Lighthouses, 1883–1939’ (In Danish, ‘Fuglene ved de danske Fyr, 1883–1939’). They want to use any occurrence data recorded in those books from two lighthouses (Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr) for an on-site exhibition project.The NHM-DK has started discussions with their national GBIF node, DanBIF, about the mobilization of the information contained in these volumes, namely to preserve their contents for the future and provide online access for everyone. With the involvement of DanBIF, there is intent to publish and register the resulting extracted data with GBIF. As GBIF requires a license be applied with all published data, the museum has decided to publish the data with a Creative Commons license allowing use of data with attribution (CC-BY).The IT services required are provided by the Technology Unit of the University of Copenhagen, as for all museum digital projects.The NHM-DK deputy director, who is coordinating this piece of work has developed a general outline for the work:The museum will carry out the digitization of the literature using two library staff members trained in the use of the library scanner to scan delicate volumes. They will also extract text from the scans through OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software.Three volunteers from the Copenhagen Ornithological Society (COS) who regularly collaborate with the museum and are familiar with the birds of the region have been enlisted to assist and will complete the transfer of data from the scanned PDFs into spreadsheet format. They will need to go to the museum and use the computers available in the library to gain access to the files stored in the museum intranet (private network).The Ornithology Curator in the NHM-DK Bird Department will lead the team responsible for taxonomic checking, data curation, cleaning, format and transformation, and will oversee the entry of metadata for the published dataset. The team includes a collaborating researcher from Sweden, and two postdoctoral students. They have been selected for this task because they are used to working with digital biodiversity data. They will all use their own work computers.The DanBIF Node Manager will ensure that the institution is adequately registered in GBIF as a data publisher and that the deputy director and the ornithology curator have the proper credentials and access to DanBIF’s IPT instance to upload and publish the data.Original data collectionIn the period 1883-1939, there were 45 lighthouses and lightships functioning in Denmark. These lighthouses were used by several species of birds during the nights of the bird migration period from the years 1886 through 1939. The presence and activities of these birds were recorded, especially by the keepers of these lighthouses who also collected specimens that were sent to the museum in Copenhagen. These birds were carefully preserved and catalogued by collection managers at the museum and the specimens can still be found there today. Observations of weather conditions during the nights when birds were observed by the keepers were also documented.

Dentro del museo, se encuentra la Colección de Herpetología, la cual comprende especímenes en líquido, naturalizados, esqueletos y pieles provenientes mayoritariamente de Uruguay y países adyacentes. En la actualidad, su cuidado se encuentra a cargo del profesor de Sistemática Animal, Luis Suarez, quien realiza tareas curatoriales, investigativas y de docencia, quien junto con otros profesores del departamento y algunos estudiantes, convencidos de los beneficios y bondades que brinda la publicación de información a través del SIB Uruguay, desean iniciar el proceso de publicación de los datos de la colección de herpetología (MNHN-H). Esto permitirá ampliar la visibilidad de las colecciones biológicas de la universidad y dar acceso abierto a dichos datos para que sean consultados o usados en diferentes campos de investigación, llegando incluso a ser utilizados por tomadores de decisiones a nivel regional o nacional.

A survey was conducted to enumerate the flora of the College of Natural resources as an assignment for the Module “Systematic Botany and Ethnobotany”. This survey covered the boys hostel area and the agriculture field above the village covering 3.15 hectares. The survey showed that there is slightly a greater number of introduced plants than native plants in the study area. Largest number of plants were in family Asteraceae. Herbs represent the dominant type of plant. This checklist has some plants encountered from the above mentioned place within the college campus along with occurrence data but it does not represent the overall campus flora.

Alibaug is one of the coastal town and a municipal council in Raigad District. Geographically Alibaug town is positioned at the coast of Arabian Sea. On its east are the Western Ghats. Towards south is Ratnagiri district which is part of Konkan region and on the north is the metro city Mumbai. Alibaug town is situated at around 120 km south of Mumbai and 143 km from Pune cities. Revdanda, Chaul, Nagaon, Akshi, Varsoli, Thal, Navgaon, Kihim and Aawas are some of the famous tourist destination. Over the past years Alibaug has become one of the important tourist destination in Maharashtra. Apart from beaches and tourist destinations this site has been poorly studied for other factors like forest cover, wildlife and biodiversity. India is a country having coastal coverage on east, west and south sides by Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea respectively. The coastline admeasuring 7500 km in length, exhibits remarkable floral and faunal diversity which has been well explored by researchers. On the other hand the forests of Alibaug has been poorly studied for biodiversity and wildlife. The Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is one of the protected area situated around 41 km from Alibaug has been well studied forest area for wildlife and biodiversity. Present dataset is the outcome of the biodiversity surveys conducted at Alibaug in 2020.

After a short consultation with their regular partners, NHM-DK received a suggestion from the Head of the management office of the Nordjylland National Park. They would like the contents of a particular classic literature compilation digitized for a project they are running: ‘Birds at the Danish Lighthouses, 1883–1939’ (In Danish, ‘Fuglene ved de danske Fyr, 1883–1939’). They want to use any occurrence data recorded in those books from two lighthouses (Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr) for an on-site exhibition project.

The NHM-DK has started discussions with their national GBIF node, DanBIF, about the mobilization of the information contained in these volumes, namely to preserve their contents for the future and provide online access for everyone. With the involvement of DanBIF, there is intent to publish and register the resulting extracted data with GBIF. As GBIF requires a license be applied with all published data, the museum has decided to publish the data with a Creative Commons license allowing use of data with attribution (CC-BY).

The IT services required are provided by the Technology Unit of the University of Copenhagen, as for all museum digital projects.

The NHM-DK deputy director, who is coordinating this piece of work has developed a general outline for the work:1. The museum will carry out the digitization of the literature using two library staff members trained in the use of the library scanner to scan delicate volumes. They will also extract text from the scans through OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software.2. Three volunteers from the Copenhagen Ornithological Society (COS) who regularly collaborate with the museum and are familiar with the birds of the region have been enlisted to assist and will complete the transfer of data from the scanned PDFs into spreadsheet format. They will need to go to the museum and use the computers available in the library to gain access to the files stored in the museum intranet (private network).3. The Ornithology Curator in the NHM-DK Bird Department will lead the team responsible for taxonomic checking, data curation, cleaning, format and transformation, and will oversee the entry of metadata for the published dataset. The team includes a collaborating researcher from Sweden, and two postdoctoral students. They have been selected for this task because they are used to working with digital biodiversity data. They will all use their own work computers.4. The DanBIF Node Manager will ensure that the institution is adequately registered in GBIF as a data publisher and that the deputy director and the ornithology curator have the proper credentials and access to DanBIF’s IPT instance to upload and publish the data.

This dataset presents occurrence records and notes of birds extracted from the multiple volumes of “Fuglene ved de danske Fyr 1883-1939” (i.e. “Birds at the Danish Lighthouses 1883-1939”).The dataset was created firstly by digitizing the book volumes "Fuglene ved de danske Fyr" into PDF files, OCR-ing the PDF files and finally extracting relevant data and compiling them in a database file. In the period 1883-1939, there were 45 lighthouses and lightships functioning in Denmark. This dataset contains specific occurrence records and notes on bird species that struck 2 of these, namely Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr. The dataset covers records from during the nights of bird migration period from the years 1886 through 1939 (there were no occurrence records or notes on Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr between 1883- 1885 and 1887-1888). A total of 1212 records were generated with 742 records from Lodbjerg Fyr and 470 records from Hanstholm Fyr. The two specific lighthouses Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr were selected for extraction from the book volumes through a suggestion from the Thy National Park, Denmark. They wanted to use these specific occurrence data for an exhibition project. This databasing effort has been co-funded by Thy National Park and DanBIF. Future projects could include to extract data on more lighthouses from these digitized book volumes. The number of specimens of the fallen birds that were sent by light keepers to the Zoological Museum of Copenhagen was also recorded in this dataset. These birds were carefully preserved and catalogued by collection workers at the museum and the specimens can still be found there today. Observations on weather conditions during nights when birds were observed by light keepers were also included. Data from this dataset were extracted from “Report on Birds in Danmark, 1886” (published by Ornis) and Fuglene ved de danske Fyr volumes (published in Videnskabelige Meddelelser fra den Naturhistoriske Forening i København). Most of the book volumes were compiled by Herluf Winge (1857-1923), a Danish zoologist who studied mammalian dentition. After the early death of his brother, Oluf Winge (1855-1889), who was a leading Danish ornithologist at his time, Herluf helped to compile "Fuglene ved de danske Fyr": Birds at the Danish Lighthouses 1891-1910 and until 1912 he supplemented this with his own bird observations.

The International Butterfly Amateur Network (IBAN) has been providing a framework for national amateur observational groups to capture data about the occurrence of butterflies (Lepidoptera) since 2009. An extensive network of amateur observers use a standard protocol based on Pollard walks to capture this information on paper sheets that they send to their national office. Some of these offices digitize this information into spreadsheets, but others do not have the human resources to do this and they send the paper logs to the IBAN for processing. IBAN produces an annual report based on the sightings provided by these national members, with updated distribution maps and analysis of population trends for some key species.

The vascular plant collection of Boris Achtarov Herbarium (BNHM) at the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia consists of over 15000 specimens collected mainly from Bulgaria. In 2020 the collections were moved to new storage, where the specimens have been stored under appropriate conditions. Currently, the collection is undergoing a reorganisation and digitisation of the herbarium specimens has been underway as part of the Distributed System of Scientific Collections (DiSSCo) in Bulgaria (DiSSCo-BG) since 2022.

The Occurrence dataset for Butterfly species in Banabitan Biodiversity Park(Central Park), North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India is published by Nature Mates Nature Club. Banabitan is an urbanized park located in the centre of Salt Lake City, is the second largest park in Kolkata. It is maintained under the Urban Recreation Forestry Division, Directorate of Forest, Government of West Bengal. Presently it encompasses a total area of around 65 acres , of which 46acers are land mass and the remaining 19 acres are a water body located in the centre of the park. Urban ecosystems depend on land usage and other multiple factors. With the increase in urbanization parks, gardens inside the city play a very important role in maintain natural vegetation and sustaining its biodiversity. This dataset enlists Butterfly species in Banabitan. The study was conducted at various parts of the Banabitan Biodiversity Park. We are thankful to the forest department for giving us the opportunity to work at Banabitan since long. The respected CF, and DFO sirs of Urban Recreation Forestry Division are specially mentioned here for their unconditional support and guidance.

The University of White Plains is a well recognized tertiary education institution in Guatemala and a national reference for biodiversity research. The Plant Biology Department keeps a medium-size herbarium containing approximately 80,000 specimens collected in and around the local region and dating from the mid-20th century to the present. The collection includes important specimens including types and endemics. Currently, the care of the collection is assigned to the Professor of Plant Systematics, who performs curatorial tasks as well as their regular research and teaching work. The Departmental Admin is responsible for day-to-day administrative tasks for the herbarium such as purchasing consumables including paper and labels. Faculty staff and students collaborating within the department occasionally work on and update the identifications on the specimens and there are two retired botanists who regularly volunteer in the collection assisting the Professor to prepare loans. The University already has an online search for its library collections which is maintained by the University’s central web-team on externally hosted servers. No natural history specimens are currently served via this platform. The Head of the Plant Biology Department has recently secured a 50,000USD, two year grant to image and publish the botanical collections information online. The team wants to use this opportunity to establish a permanent digitization and publishing protocol that will give higher visibility to the herbarium and continue attracting funding.

The data is recorded on paper sheets and sent to the national office by a vast network of volunteer observers using an uniform protocol based on Pollard walks. Some of these offices turn this data into spreadsheets through digitization, but others lack the staff to do so and submit the paper logs to the IBAN for processing. Based on the sightings reported by these national members, IBAN creates a yearly report that includes updated distribution maps and an analysis of population trends for select important species. Most of the employees at the IBAN headquarters are volunteers. Every year, more and more data are received, and the paper data sheets that haven't been digitised are fast piled up due to the rising popularity of citizen research and the widespread fascination in butterflies as a charismatic group of animals. The IBAN steering committee wants to start regularly posting these statistics online, thus they are looking for a more effective and flexible methodology for creating digital data. Additionally, they want to begin processing the digital photos that their volunteers are already taking with their smartphones and tablets. Their ultimate goal is to increase the network's visibility and establish partnerships with local and regional authorities in order to have an impact on lepidoptera conservation policy in the nations concerned.

Hawaii Invasive species council (HISC) is aimed to develop statewide curriculum on invasive species, to increase awareness and to do that we have collaborated with local high schools. Teachers at the high schools are directly involved in preparing the curriculum and will actively participate in the process. The other objectives of this project is to increase data collection and produce annotated checklist for the underreported areas of the islands. This project is also helped by the students at University of Hawaii in Maui (UHM). The dataset provide a list of invasive species present in the island as well as detail occurrences of each of the species.

In Denmark, 45 lighthouses were built in 1883 at several key points to direct diverse ship movements. These lighthouses soon developed into a destination for migratory birds in diverse forms. Since 1886, the lighthouse keepers have been counting the number of different birds and observing their behavior. Additionally, several bird specimens were gathered and transferred to the Copenhagen museum for preservation and classification. During the nights of observation and collection, weather information was recorded along with information about the birds. Researchers can still access the collections in the museum to analyse them. Till 1938, this practice persisted. The complete dataset generated from this study was edited and cleaned in order to make it publication-ready.

The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHM-DK) is a research centre associated with the University of Copenhagen. In the period 1883-1939, there were 45 lighthouses and lightships functioning in Denmark. These lighthouses were used by several species of birds during the nights of the bird migration period from the years 1886 through 1939. The presence and activities of these birds were recorded, especially by the keepers of these lighthouses who also collected specimens that were sent to the museum in Copenhagen. These birds were carefully preserved and catalogued by collection managers at the museum and the specimens can still be found there today. Observations of weather conditions during the nights when birds were observed by the keepers were also documented.

Since 2009, the International Butterfly Amateur Network (IBAN) has offered national amateur observing organisations a framework for gathering information regarding the occurrence of butterflies (Lepidoptera). This data is recorded on paper sheets and sent to the national office by a vast network of volunteer observers using an uniform protocol based on Pollard walks. Some of these offices turn this data into spreadsheets through digitization, but others lack the staff to do so and submit the paper logs to the IBAN for processing. Based on the sightings reported by these national members, IBAN creates a yearly report that includes updated distribution maps and an analysis of population trends for select important species. Most of the employees at the IBAN headquarters are volunteers. Every year, more and more data are received, and the paper data sheets that haven't been digitised are fast piled up due to the rising popularity of citizen research and the widespread fascination in butterflies as a charismatic group of animals. The IBAN steering committee wants to start regularly posting these statistics online, thus they are looking for a more effective and flexible methodology for creating digital data. Additionally, they want to begin processing the digital photos that their volunteers are already taking with their smartphones and tablets. Their ultimate goal is to increase the network's visibility and establish partnerships with local and regional authorities in order to have an impact on lepidoptera conservation policy in the nations concerned.

We present three years of presence-absence data of 49 vascular plant species in 15 patches of dry, calcareous grassland habitat. The species are considered to be habitat specialists, and thus unlikely to occur in between the patches. The data set combines three years of surveys, the last of which are re-surveys of a subset described in previous publications (Bakkestuen et al., 2014; Evju et al., 2015, 2016; Evju & Sverdrup-Thygeson, 2016; Wollan et al., 2011). Absences can be inferred for the 49 species included.

The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHM-DK) is a research centre associated with the University of Copenhagen. Their library is a member of the national library association who recently received state funding to make available online the resources held by its members. The NHM-DK would like to begin digitization of the field notebooks, journal publications and books held in their library, some of which have significant historic value. After a short consultation with their regular partners, NHM-DK received a suggestion from the Head of the management office of the Nordjylland National Park. They would like the contents of a particular classic literature compilation digitized for a project they are running: ‘Birds at the Danish Lighthouses, 1883–1939’ (In Danish, ‘Fuglene ved de danske Fyr, 1883–1939’). They want to use any occurrence data recorded in those books from two lighthouses (Lodbjerg Fyr and Hanstholm Fyr) for an on-site exhibition project. The NHM-DK has started discussions with their national GBIF node, DanBIF, about the mobilization of the information contained in these volumes, namely to preserve their contents for the future and provide online access for everyone. With the involvement of DanBIF, there is intent to publish and register the resulting extracted data with GBIF. As GBIF requires a license be applied with all published data, the museum has decided to publish the data with a Creative Commons license allowing use of data with attribution (CC-BY). The IT services required are provided by the Technology Unit of the University of Copenhagen, as for all museum digital projects. The NHM-DK deputy director, who is coordinating this piece of work has developed a general outline for the work: The museum will carry out the digitization of the literature using two library staff members trained in the use of the library scanner to scan delicate volumes. They will also extract text from the scans through OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. Three volunteers from the Copenhagen Ornithological Society (COS) who regularly collaborate with the museum and are familiar with the birds of the region have been enlisted to assist and will complete the transfer of data from the scanned PDFs into spreadsheet format. They will need to go to the museum and use the computers available in the library to gain access to the files stored in the museum intranet (private network). The Ornithology Curator in the NHM-DK Bird Department will lead the team responsible for taxonomic checking, data curation, cleaning, format and transformation, and will oversee the entry of metadata for the published dataset. The team includes a collaborating researcher from Sweden, and two postdoctoral students. They have been selected for this task because they are used to working with digital biodiversity data. They will all use their own work computers. The DanBIF Node Manager will ensure that the institution is adequately registered in GBIF as a data publisher and that the deputy director and the ornithology curator have the proper credentials and access to DanBIF’s IPT instance to upload and publish the data.
